If your business uses or creates substances, or carries out processes which might cause
harm to health, the law requires you to control the risks to workers.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) apply to most harmful
substances, but lead and asbestos are covered by separate regulations.
A suitable and sufficient COSHH risk assessment must:
- Identify hazardous substances and harmful by-products (dust, fume, mist, vapour, gas).
- Consider how exposure occurs (inhalation, skin, ingestion, injection, eyes).
- Identify who might be harmed, including maintenance staff, contractors and visitors.
- Evaluate existing controls and decide on further controls required.
- Record the significant findings where you have 5 or more employees.
- Review the assessment and controls regularly and when changes occur.
